From Sewing My First Quilt to Designing Patterns & Kits
Finding the Right Hobby (and Escaping the Screens)
I am Ashmita, and quilting wasn’t something I had planned to get into. It all started in December 2024, when I was feeling completely worn out. I had been spending way too much time in front of screens, and I knew I needed an escape — something hands-on, something that would get me away from screens and let me enjoy creating something from scratch. I told my husband I wanted to find a creative hobby, something that felt real and calming. We talked about a few ideas, but sewing just felt right — it seemed like the kind of slow, satisfying project I could unwind with each day, far away from screens.
And the best part? My husband ordered a Singer Heavy Duty sewing machine for me that very same day — before I could even change my mind!
That’s how my quilting journey began — and today, I love creating beginner quilt patterns and cozy quilt kits to share with others.

Learning to Sew — One Step at a Time
I’d never sewn anything before, but the idea of learning something new — and building something beautiful from start to finish — really excited me. So we got a sewing machine, and with a little help from my mom (who’s an amazing sewist), I began learning step by step.
Why Quilts Caught My Eye
At first, I thought I’d start with something simple — maybe a little sewing project to practice on. But the more I explored, the more I kept coming back to quilts. I’ve always loved the idea of working on longer projects, rather than quick weekend ones. Quilting felt like something I could enjoy day after day, making slow progress without getting bored. The more I looked, the more I knew — I wanted my first project to be a quilt.

Starting My First Quilt — and Loving It
So instead of starting small, I dove right in and decided to make a lap quilt as my very first sewing project. 😅
I was nervous — I had never even sewn a straight line! But YouTube became my best friend, and one video at a time, I taught myself the basics. I started by learning how to sew half-square triangles (HSTs). Once I got the hang of them, I decided to try the Five Oaks Retreat quilt pattern. I didn’t make the full quilt — I chose to sew just four blocks — but I really enjoyed it. It was definitely a tricky choice for a first quilt project, but I stuck with it and finished my quilt in just two weeks.
Making the Best of What I Had
Before starting, we also went fabric shopping — but I couldn’t find any good pure cotton quilting fabric nearby. And to be honest, I was way too excited to wait! So I decided to get creative and used some shirting fabric instead. It wasn’t perfect — the fabric stretched here and there, and some seams didn’t match up — but I kept going. One stitch at a time, my quilt started to come together. And when I finally finished it and held it in my hands, I felt so proud. It may not have been perfect, but it was mine — and it taught me more than any small project ever could have.

From One Quilt to Many — And Building The Cozy Quilt Studio
After finishing my first quilt, I couldn’t wait to make more. One quilt quickly led to another — and soon, I was sketching my own designs and playing with different ideas.
As I kept experimenting, I found myself wanting to share what I was learning — the little tricks, the simple patterns, and the joy of seeing a quilt come together. I knew I wasn’t the only one looking for modern beginner quilt patterns and easy ways to get started. In fact, my very first five quilt patterns were built entirely around half-square triangles (HSTs) — one of the simplest and most versatile blocks — so that beginners could jump right in and start making quilts they’d be proud of.
That’s what inspired me to create The Cozy Quilt Studio — a place where I could share my love of quilting, and make it easier for others to start their own quilting journey.
